On the road again…

I said in my first What’s Up? that at the moment nothing much occurs in my life apart from being a grandmother.  That’s not quite true.

I have a new book out! Always a HUGE event! It’s a book I’m wild about: BABY BEDTIME, illustrated by the sublime Emma Quay, for whom and to whom a thousand thanks. All the information about BABY BEDTIME can found in LATEST BOOK. I also read BABY BEDTIME aloud so you can get a real feel for the love I poured into it: see CURRENT READ ALOUDS. An itinerary of my BABY BEDTIME book tour in Australia in early November appears below.

I’ve just come back from a speedy, pleasing trip to the USA (my 112th visit!) where I met old friends and made new ones at the USBBY convention in St Louis, Missouri. It was a gathering of Tip Top Librarians and my main message to them—in the technological world we live in—was not to forget to read to the children who come to their libraries. It’s what all children’s librarians used to do and it’s still a delight for children—much more so than the latest app, because being read to is about connecting with another human being, being enchanted, and having one’s soul touched.

Other things happen out of the blue, which also remind me that I’m a writer still, not merely ‘Nanou’. The New York Public Library has placed WHERE IS THE GREEN SHEEP on its list of The 100 Greats in the Last 100 Years.

Imagine that!  Of all the children’s picture books published in that time! GREEN SHEEP has been the book in Australia over the last almost-ten years. I thought sadly that it had never quite made its mark in the US. Clearly I was wrong.  Hurrah! (I hope you’re enjoying the second book, after GREEN SHEEP, that Judy Horacek and I have collaborated on: GOODNIGHT, SLEEP TIGHT!)

To add to that piece of wonderment, the renowned BookTrust in England has placed TEN LITTLE FINGERS AND TEN LITTLE TOES on their list of the 100 Best Books for Children 0-5. So I’m very happy to be Mem Fox, author, right now, as I rush away from the computer to be a grandmother for the rest of the day….

Before I go, the bookseller who’s selling the books on this website is James Williams of Pegi Williams Bookshop, in Adelaide, my home-town. I’ve had a connection with the shop since the early 1970s. I adored Pegi, the original owner. She was a redoubtable, diminutive powerhouse who continued to work at the shop until a couple of hour before she died in her eighties. Her love and support of writers, teachers, librarians, parents—and of course, children— was legendary. She made us all feel that we were the most important person in her life. So Pegi Williams Bookshop was the natural choice as bookseller for my website.

In September 2013 I visited the shop to take part in a video chat with the lovely James Willams, Pegi’s nephew, who now runs the store. It’s a homely chat, very informal, and I was recovering from a cold so I sound gravelly, but anyway…to find out, among other things, about James selling TEN LITTLE FINGERS AND TEN LITTLE TOES when he doesn’t have that many fingers himself, go to…
